These findings come from the 2018 US Bureau of Educational Achievement Tables package, which uses data from the Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey.

Having a bachelor’s degree remains a valuable asset in many sectors of the US labor market. College graduates tend to earn more than those who did not attend college and are often hired first. At the same time, many Americans say they can’t afford a four-year degree — or don’t want to.
The Master’s Trap
This Pew Research Center survey of US college graduates relies on data from sources including the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, National Center for Education Statistics, National Student Clearinghouse, and the Federal Reserve Bank, as well as surveys conducted by The. center.
Everyone who took part in the Pew Research Center’s reported survey is a member of the American Trends Center (ATP), an online research group registered through the national science, non-randomized mailing list. Nearly four in 10 Americans age 25 and older have a bachelor’s degree, a share that has grown over the past decade. As of 2021, 37.9 percent of adults in this age group have a bachelor’s degree, including 14.3 percent who also earned a college or professional degree, according to data from the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. This share increased by 7.5 percent compared to 30.4% in 2011.
Another 10.5% had an associate’s degree in 2021. Nearly four in 10 Americans age 25 and older had a high school diploma with no additional education (25.3%) or completed some college but no diploma (14.9%).
How To Choose A Graduate Program
Interestingly, women are now more likely to graduate from college than men, according to the Current Population Survey. In 2021, 39% of women aged 25 and over had a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 37% of men in the same age group. The gap in college completion is even greater among adults aged 25 to 34: 46 percent of women in that age group have a bachelor’s degree, compared to 36 percent of men.
Degree, 34% of men said the main reason they didn’t get a four-year college degree was because they didn’t want to. One in four women say the same thing. Men are also more likely to say that the main reason they don’t have a four-year degree is that they don’t need more education for the job or job they want (26% of men said this vs. 20% of women).
Women (44%) are more likely than men (39%) to say that not having enough money for college is the main reason they don’t have a bachelor’s degree. Men and women were equally likely to say that the biggest obstacle was working to support their family.
There are racial and ethnic differences in patterns of college completion and reasons for not graduating. Among adults 25 and older, 65 percent of Asian Americans have a bachelor’s degree or higher, along with 42 percent of white adults, 28 percent of black adults and 21 percent of Hispanic adults, according to the latest Census data for 2021. The percentage of bachelor’s degree holders in the group each has increased since 2010. In that year, 52 percent of Asian Americans had a four-year degree or more, compared to a third of white adults, 20 percent of black adults and 14 percent of Hispanic adults.
Can A.i. Treat Mental Illness?
The Center’s October 2021 survey found that among adults without a bachelor’s degree, Hispanic adults (52%) were more likely than those who were white (39%) or black (41%) to cite being uneducated as the main reason. a four-year college because they couldn’t afford it. Hispanic and black adults are more likely than their white counterparts to cite the importance of working to support their family as a major reason.
While one-third of white adults say not wanting to go to school is the main reason for not completing a four-year degree, smaller shares of blacks (22%) and Hispanics (23%) say the same. White adults are more likely to indicate that they do not need additional vocational education or training. (There were not enough Asian adults without a bachelor’s degree in the sample to analyze separately.)
Only 65 percent of students who begin a degree or certificate program complete their program within six years, according to the latest data from the National Student Clearinghouse, a nonprofit assessment and research organization that tracks first-time students who enrolled in Fall 2015 with the goal of pursuing a degree or certificate. The graduation rate for this group was highest among students who started at four-year private schools (78.3%) and lowest among those who started at two-year public schools (42.2%).
Business is the most common bachelor’s degree, followed by health professionals. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about one-fifth (19%) of the approximately 2 million degrees awarded.
