Shaq Master’s Degree – Former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal shared why he paid some of his friends to get a master’s degree during an appearance on the Be Better Off Show.

The basketball champion and serial entrepreneur discussed his wealth-building principles and the power of education on the Sept. 5 show.

O’Neal said that once at a business meeting, people in the crowd greeted him, but he immediately started talking to the accounts and lawyers of the G.O.A.T. because they thought he didn’t understand the language of business.

The meeting inspired him to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Phoenix, which is primarily an online college, but he wanted to study in person. After the school told him they were only for face-to-face classes of 15 or more students, he decided to pay 15 of his friends to join the class and earn their master’s degrees as well.

“I noticed that every time I went to a business meeting, the guys we’re dealing with would say, ‘Hey Shaq, how are you?’ And then they went and looked at my lawyers and my accountants and all those guys,” he said. “So I said, ‘Oh, you don’t think I’m in charge. You think I don’t understand the word. So I went and got my master’s degree at the University of Phoenix.’

“The University of Phoenix is a primarily online program,” he continued. “But I went to the senior managers and said, ‘I don’t want to do it online.’ I want someone to teach a class. And they came back and said, “Unfortunately, we can’t set up a classroom for a child.” You need 15 people. So I paid 15 of my friends to get a master’s degree.’

O’Neal has put his title to good use and is said to have a net worth of $400 million. The 50-year-old now owns several Big Chicken restaurants in Las Vegas. The franchise currently has 10 locations in Las Vegas and has expanded to several states including California, New York and Ohio.
