Online Master Degree In Social Work
We offer small classes, experiential learning, seminars and challenging internships. Our curriculum reflects and promotes advances in contemporary social work practice to develop the knowledge, values and skills necessary to meet the unique needs of rural communities. Graduates can tackle diverse and complex social problems and use multi-level assessment, intervention and evaluation strategies.
How To Apply
Advanced status allows specially qualified students who earned their BSW within the last 7 years of their degree to earn their MSW with 46 credits over two years instead of 63 credits over three years. Advanced resident students begin the program in the summer by completing three 2-credit courses that serve as a “bridge” to the specialization year.
The Master of Social Work is a blended program with classrooms and face-to-face meetings. While most classes can be completed without a specific day or time, there are some synchronous classes, such as field seminar courses, where you and your classmates go to class together at the same time as you would in a traditional on-campus class. . One-on-one meetings are with your cohort, a group of students who take all of their classes together as they work toward a degree. With cohorts, students are part of a learning community where they can collaborate with teachers and develop relationships with peers.
Cohorts meet on Saturdays twice a semester at the University of Maine in Orono, ME. The faculty will visit students on internship at least once per semester during their internship. A field practicum can be completed at an organization that is geographically convenient for students in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont.

The Field Practicum is an integral part of the MSW program and provides students with the opportunity to integrate and apply their academic learning in a practical setting.
During the field placement, students will be mentored by an experienced social worker with an MSW. Faculty will also visit you and your advisor at your placement to provide support and ensure you get the most out of your experience. Because teachers travel on various assignments, this program is only open to residents of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
There are two field placements that take place on weekdays during normal business hours at a qualified geographic placement organization. The internship in the generalist year (SWK 595) comprises 400 hours (approximately 14-16 hours per week) over two academic semesters and a two-hour seminar per week. The internship in the specialized year (SWK 695) comprises 500 hours (approximately 20 hours per week) in one academic year plus one weekly seminar. Students in the regular program do both practicums in the field, while students at the higher level only do exercises in the specialized year.
In the specialization year, it is possible to do an internship as a summer block internship after completing all courses, from mid-May to mid-August; this requires approximately 40 hours/week.
