As a student interested in politics and political science, you will not only engage in research in two federal political systems – Switzerland and Canada – but also in European and North American ways of doing research in political science.

You will be enrolled at the University of Lucerne and study for one semester in Lucerne before moving to Ottawa for half a year; you will then return to Switzerland for the third semester. In the final semester, you will write your Master’s thesis – in any field of your choice – under the guidance of a lecturer at Carleton University and another at the University of Lucerne.

Students will enjoy a real educational and research environment and benefit from the strengths and expertise of both universities. In addition – and unlike other student mobility opportunities – you will receive Swiss and Canadian certification for the political science departments participating in the program.

The Department of Political Science at the University of Lucerne is a small but highly connected institution. In teaching and research, he focuses on areas such as party politics and European integration, citizenship and democracy, domestic support of the international community, policy promotion and policy evaluation. In Lucerne and Ottawa, all classes are taught in English. Therefore, admission to the double master’s degree program requires a good command of English (see the “Application and admission” section for details). Students may add one or two courses taught in another language (German or French) to their curriculum if they are sufficiently proficient in that language.

Studying the dual master’s degree program in Lucerne and in Ottawa will allow you to become familiar with two different educational methods and two ways of studying political science in Europe and North America. This, together with the fact that all courses are taught in English – the “lingua franca” of the (social) sciences – makes the program suitable for students considering a career in science. This is the ideal stepping stone to a PhD in Political Science.

The second program is suitable not only for students who plan to pursue an academic career, but also for those who may be planning to work in an international environment – in the public, private or non-profit sectors. Graduates of the second program have significantly increased their chances of finding a job later in companies such as the G20, OECD, UBS, Nestlé, the International Labor Organization ILO or an international non-governmental organization such as Greenpeace.

The second program started only in the autumn. More information about the application process, deadlines and the online enrollment application tool can be found on the Office of Student Affairs website.

Political Science Ma

A Master of Arts (Latin: Magister Artium or Artium Magister; abbreviated as MA, M.A., AM or A.M.) is a master’s degree awarded by universities in many countries. The degree is comparable to a Master of Science degree. Those who enter the degree usually study subjects within the humanities and social sciences, such as history, literature, languages, linguistics, public administration, political science, communication studies, law and diplomacy; however, different universities have different views and may offer degrees in fields often considered science and mathematics. A degree may be awarded on the basis of coursework and examination, research, or a combination of the two.

The Master of Arts degree has its origins in the teaching license or Lictia docdi of the University of Paris, designed to make “masters” qualified teachers of their subjects.

Like other EU member states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia follow the Bologna process. The Czech Republic and Slovakia offer two different types of master’s degrees; Both give the name of Msgr. and Eng. to be used before the name.

Before the reform to implement the Bologna process, a master’s degree could be obtained after five years of non-teaching. Under the new system, the duration is only two years, but requires a three-year bachelor’s program already completed (designation Bc.). Writing a thesis (in Master’s and Bachelor’s programs) and passing final exams are required to obtain the degree. Most of the final exams cover the main learning areas of the entire curriculum, which means that the student has to prove his knowledge of the subjects he has taken a second time. three years of their studies. Evidence is also included in the defense of a thesis rather than a course.

Traditional master’s degrees are awarded in the social sciences and most humanities (world affairs, European studies and economics), with the exception of the visual and creative arts such as music and drama.
