The Specialist Practice Interest Module offers the opportunity to undertake in-depth study in a chosen area of special interest and can be undertaken in a national or international setting.
What Is A Social Worker?
This module lasts throughout the first year and focuses on preparation for direct practice. It is an interactive module that includes skills workshops and a high level of engagement from service users, carers and educators from partner agencies. You will learn about the role and tasks of social workers and develop professional oral and written communication skills. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your written work and communication skills. Experienced people and caregivers offer mock interviews in the Practice Learning Suite.
The focus of this module is to enable you to develop a fundamental theoretical knowledge of assessment and intervention methods in social work, drawing on psychological and sociological theories and research. You will develop essential skills to analyze and explain situations, hypothesize about possible outcomes and select intervention methods to achieve desired results. You will also develop communication skills and knowledge in building, sustaining and maintaining relationships, as well as critical thinking and analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. Learning will include the application of theory and research concepts in lectures, interactive workshops and skills laboratory role-plays, research experiences, and through formative and summative tasks.
This module will enable you to understand human development based on the value of diversity and diversity. A life course perspective will inform the content of the module, including key theoretical frameworks and research findings. A critical focus will be placed on the interaction of social, political, cultural, economic and environmental influences on people’s lives. Ideas about normative development, including important milestones in childhood and adolescence, will therefore be underpinned by a critical understanding of structural inequalities, which can affect individual development and perpetuate the difficulties faced by certain groups and communities. The relevance to social work will be highlighted through case studies, directed readings and facilitated discussions. Experiential and reflective learning will be promoted through a structured child observation task and reflective seminars.

In this module, you will develop an understanding of key contemporary social work issues and gain awareness of how these developments underpin the provision of social work services and the implications when social work theory is applied. Provides an introduction to social work law, ethics and policy. These three framework areas are essential to understanding the role played by social workers involved in making judgments and decisions that affect the lives of people who use social care services. The module will introduce the three frameworks, highlight the links between these frameworks, and provide opportunities to apply them to problems and situations you encounter in practice.
This module is a seventy-day internship, carried out in a statutory or voluntary sector agency. We organize this place for you. You will be provided with relevant learning opportunities and supported and supervised by a learning team. At the end of your internship, you will be expected to demonstrate your practice against the Professional Competency Framework (PCF) in line with the standard required of students at the end of the first internship.
You will conduct a detailed organizational study in a chosen area of special interest that is important to social work. These studies can be carried out in a national or international context, which will make it possible to compare and evaluate different forms of service provision.

Study Social Work
You will research existing research and analyze an area of research relevant to social work. Through your final project, you will be expected to contribute to existing research and social work knowledge related to your chosen topic. Once you have chosen your topic, you will read extensively and compile a review of relevant research literature and publications in that area. You will relate your literature review to relevant implications for the social work profession.
By attending the lectures, you will be able to classify research according to epistemological position and methodological approach, and identify the advantages and disadvantages of a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods in the social sciences, critically analyzing research presented in a social work literature series. .
GCSEs at level 4 or above (or grade C or above for GCSEs taken before 2017) in five subjects, including English language or an equivalent qualification, e.g. level 2 functional skills/key literacy. Non-native speakers who do not have GCSE English equivalent at Grade 4 (formerly Grade C) or equivalent (e.g. Literacy Level 2 Functional Skills) requires an IELTS academic score of 7.0 or overall equivalent.
