What is Addiction Counseling? Is it right for me? Addiction counselors are licensed professionals who help others overcome addictions to substances and behaviors such as food and gambling. As a counselor, you will provide evidence-based interventions, interventions, and assessments to those struggling with addiction. Meet Alumnus Victor “Torres” Dawson Victor “Torres” Dawson, a graduate and busy professional, came to expand his career opportunities and ability to help people. As an undergraduate, he moved into the field of Human Resource Services following the advice of his longtime mentor, graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Resources. After starting a new job at Pathways, a non-profit organization. While providing foster care, psychiatric care and independent living services to the Topeka community, Dawson knew he wanted to pursue a master’s degree to expand his knowledge of addiction and counseling on the subject. Human services are a set of services offered by public and private agencies that help improve the living conditions of clients. Human services often involve the same tasks that make up social work. The two terms are often used interchangeably. Applied science degrees are generally designed for students who will “apply” their education to working directly with clients. Graduates of applied sciences can become paraprofessionals hired by social service agencies. After learning case management practices and counseling/rehabilitation techniques, these graduates will be ready to help in halfway houses, shelters, or group homes.
A.A. and that. In contrast, human services degrees may include more general education or management coursework. These programs can be tailored to students who plan to work in an office environment rather than group homes or hospitals. A.A. Programs may emphasize the business side of human services, including technology applications, government regulations, and public policy. But sometimes colleges choose to call their programs just one thing or the other, and specific initializations aren’t meant to indicate a particular type of career preparation.
